Forklift Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries utilized to run electric forklifts must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very important to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is essential for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area must be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the station should not be obstructed and an injured worker should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Never allow items like lighters or matches to be utilized while an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
