Checking your Fork Truck for Safety
A fork truck, like any industrial equipment, should be used carefully. Unlike an automobile, a fork truck is steered from the back wheel and thus has a different center of balance. Anyone operating a fork truck and everyone working within the vicinity of this machine must understand workplace safety guidelines and safe operating measures.
Safe operation of a forklift prior to using it would include a visual inspection. Fluid leaks and worn tires are potential dangers that an operator needs to check. The lifts, forks and the overhead guard must be inspected thoroughly. The safety handle should be utilized only when the forklift is being mounted.
To ensure that they are operating correctly, the horns, alarms and lights should be checked on a regular basis whilst the guages and monitors may need to be adjusted. The seat should be adjusted and safety belt fastened prior to starting the truck.
To avoid tipping the machine, take turns cautiously and always choose the low rate speed when driving. If the load blocks the vision of the driver, the truck must be driven in reverse gear. Be aware of the location of any pedestrians and obstacles when driving.
The driver must always sit in the cage enclosure and keep all body parts in the vehicle so as to prevent any possibility of injury. The forks should be kept a few inches above the ground when driving. Never raise or lower lifts when you are driving or the truck could become unstable. Do not permit anybody to walk under lift when the engines are running.
Stopping at intersections and watching for approaching traffic are basics for driving safely. It is really a good idea to sound the horn before proceeding as well as occasionally when operating in aisles. That way, you would warn any approaching person to your presence.
